Asphalt rehabilitation during ongoing air traffic? No problem with Fliegl
Apron 1 of Hamburg Airport is to be renovated. During this operation, it is important not to
interrupt the regular air traffic and thus avoid additional costs and revenue losses. According to safety guidelines and in order not to impede air traffic control, the height of 5 m may not be
exceeded during the rehabilitation in some parts of the construction field. As transportation
vehicles are needed for the delivery of asphalt, this hurdle poses a problem since conventional dump trucks do exceed the height of 5 m when dumping. Does that mean air traffic has to be stopped and there are enormous costs for the airport?
No. With the help of a thermally insulated vehicle with a push-off function, air traffic does not have to be interrupted as this vehicle meets the height limit of 5 m due to its proven push-off system. The commissioned company uses a fleet of thermally insulated push-off vehicles at Hamburg airport. Within three weeks, a multi-layered structure consisting of a hydraulically bound base layer, an asphalt supporting layer, a binder layer and a top layer could be installed on more than 27,000 m².
Fliegl’s “Asphaltprofi Thermo“ is an intelligent solution for difficult asphalt installation
situations such as in this case. Furthermore, trees, overhead power lines, bridges and tunnels pose no problem. The unloading process also works in ceiling heights where the use of a dump truck is no longer possible. Pushing-off instead of tipping also means greater safety – where
nothing is tilted, nothing can tip over.
The ingenious combination of thermally insulated truck body and push-off technology also represents a quantum leap in terms of installation quality. This was confirmed by several studies.
Even in insulated truck bodies, a cold layer forms in the upper area which means a thermal
segregation is taking place. And it is this cold layer which slides into the paver first. The Fliegl “Asphaltprofi Thermo” solves this problem. Using vehicles with push-off function has been proven to significantly reduce segregation. Due to the permanent mixing of the asphalt, its consistency is evenly tempered. When the butimous mix is supplied to the asphalt finisher immediately after docking, the bit-by-bit and at any time metered transfer of the mix to the finisher begins. The push-off process also leads to a perfect mixing of the asphalt during unloading and thus to a
continuous homogeneity of the mix. As a result, the installation of demixed asphalt is largely
reduced and the quality requirements are easily met. The executing construction companies thus gain safety by using push-off vehicles. The mix is delivered hot and homogenous enough so that the required degree of compaction can be achieved at all times. Thus, contractual penalties or fines can be avoided.
Fliegl‘s “Asphaltprofi Thermo” allows for simultaneous flying and pushing thanks to the innovative push-off technology of the special truck.
